Hydrogen

Composite Engineering for Hydrogen Storage Applications.

Hydrogen storage presents demanding requirements involving pressure containment, material compatibility, permeation, environmental durability and system safety.

Composite structures can contribute to lightweight storage architectures, but suitability depends on the complete vessel design, material system and qualification requirements.

DANTA is evaluating hydrogen-storage opportunities within its broader advanced-composites development strategy.

Why hydrogen storage is demanding

What a Hydrogen System Must Address.

  • Operating pressure
  • Hydrogen compatibility
  • Permeation and leakage
  • Pressure cycling
  • Environmental exposure
  • Mechanical damage
  • Temperature variation
  • End-fitting integrity
  • Inspection and service-life requirements
  • Applicable certification and transport regulations
Composite storage architecture

The Overwrap Alone Is Not the Vessel.

A composite hydrogen-storage vessel may incorporate a liner or barrier system, structural reinforcement, end fittings and protective elements.

The architecture must be selected and validated for the intended hydrogen service. A composite overwrap alone does not establish the suitability of a vessel for hydrogen storage.

Potential application areas

Where Hydrogen Storage May Apply.

  • Hydrogen mobility
  • Industrial hydrogen storage
  • Energy-system applications
  • Selected transport and storage systems
  • Hydrogen-related research and development

These are potential application areas, not a representation that DANTA currently supplies certified products for each market.

Engineering considerations

Pressure Ratings Need a Design Behind Them.

Development must consider the intended pressure, capacity, duty cycle, temperature, permeation requirements, fatigue behaviour, material compatibility and applicable design standard.

Any stated operating pressure, including 350 bar or 700 bar, must be tied to a defined vessel design and supported by qualification evidence.

Development pathway

From Requirement to Production Readiness.

  1. Requirements
  2. Feasibility
  3. Architecture Definition
  4. Material Selection
  5. Prototype Development
  6. Testing
  7. Qualification
  8. Production Readiness

The actual pathway depends on the intended application and applicable approval regime.
